Morning Promises

Introduction

I find it crucial for my personal holiness to take hold of words of life first thing in the morning. When I rise from bed, I go to God’s Word by faith because I know I need to hear His loving words to me and be filled with pleasure and joy in Him before I do anything else. I also know full well that without an arsenal of precious promises at the ready, how easily I am prone to wander to lesser pleasures throughout my day.

Morning by morning, I want to drink deeply of these new mercies that come to me through God’s promises. So as this day begins, I am coming to His Word, dependent upon Him to reveal Himself to me through His very voice.

Morning Prayers

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

—Psalm 143:8

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know that the greatest words I can receive, the most beautiful sound to hear, the most satisfying truths to my heart, come from Your unchanging Word and Your Word alone.  May I tremble with fear knowing that the Living God is counseling me today!  Speak, O Lord, I am lost without a light and a fool without an aim apart from Your Word.

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

—2 Corinthians 9:8

Prayer: Yes! I am very weak right now, and most aware of my sluggishness in the morning, but in Christ there is inexhaustible amounts of grace coming towards me today. You who did not spare Your own Son will absolutely give me all the grace that I need today—race to behold You as greatest Treasure, grace for strength when I am physically weak and emotionally frail, grace to show grace to those who are in need, and grace to trust you more.

For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

—Psalm 107:9

Prayer: All-Satisfying Treasure, I possess a longing soul. I prize things that will fill me, bring me happiness, and promise pleasure. Glorious God, majestic King, You alone are the only One who can fill me completely, who can bring me the fullest joy, who can satisfy me entirely. When I am hungry, You fill me with good things!  So, I am coming in confidence that my heart is most satisfied when I trust in You. Remind me of the joy to be found in You all day long. When I am tempted to speak badly about someone, when I am lured to pursue an impure image in my head, when I am ready to make much of myself by wallowing in self-pity, satisfy my longing soul in You!

Morning Promises

And with these promises fresh in my mind, with a faith convinced of God’s goodness towards me today, and with a heart of worship that is treasuring Christ above all else, I am ready to begin my day. I am prepared to preach these truths to my soul at the moment there is any threat of unbelief.  To arms!
