These quotes were used in the Philippians 3:17-4:1 sermon, "Setting Our Minds on Heaven," preached by Greg Dirnberger on April 22, 2018.
“In the smartphone age, we are bombarded daily by the immediate . . . The philosophical maxim, ‘I think, therefore I am,’ has been replaced with a digital motto, ‘I connect, therefore I am,’ leading to a status desire: ‘I am ‘liked,’ therefore I am.’ But our digital connections and ticks of approval are flickering pixels that cannot ground the meaning of our lives.
And yet, I seek to satisfy this desire every time I cozy up to the Facebook barstool, to be where every friend knows my name, where my presence can be affirmed and reaffirmed at virtual points throughout the day. I want anything to break the silence that makes me feel the weight of my mortality . . . Nothing puts social media and smartphone habits into context like the blunt reality of our mortality. Let it sink in a bit. Feel the brevity of life, and it will make you fully alive.”
“For our part, we must not become people who denounce but who do not weep. Neither may we become people who weep but who never denounce. Too much is stake both ways.”
“This is the ultimate consolation. We are looking forward to something, and that something is the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is going to return and when he returns he will conquer hell. He will vanquish every foe – Satan, sin, evil, and iniquity. Everything that belongs to the kingdom of darkness he will finally rout and utterly consume. We look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Life can be hard, and it may be worse. We may have to suffer persecution. We may have to face some of the things other Christians are facing at the present time. All this may come to us. This is our answer: Let hell rage, let the kingdoms of this world arise in their fury. Whatever they may do we know that the day is coming when the Savior will return, our lord Jesus Christ. He will come from his throne in heaven back to this world as King. He will have the ultimate victory over all and will reign supreme.”
